A good card doesn't have to be long
You don't need to write something profound. Often, a few specific sentences feel more personal than a long generic message.
A simple way to start is:
Why you're thinking of them + something specific to them + what you wish for them.
For example:
Happy birthday! I saw this and immediately thought of all our long evenings playing games together. I hope this gives us an excuse for another one very soon.
That feels much more personal than simply “Happy birthday, hope you have a wonderful day.”
If you don't know what to write
For a birthday
Instead of only wishing them a happy birthday, add why you chose this particular gift.
Happy birthday! I know how much you love being outside, so I thought this might inspire a few new adventures this year. I hope we can join you for one of them.
For a new baby
Remember that you can write to the parents as well as the baby.
Welcome to the world, little Anna. We can't wait to meet you. And to both of you, we hope these first weeks bring plenty of beautiful moments together, and at least a little sleep.
For a housewarming
Connect the message to the life that will happen in their new home.
Congratulations on your new home. Here's to long dinners, friends around the table and lots of happy memories made here.
To say thank you
Say what you're thanking them for, rather than only writing “thank you.”
Thank you for making us feel so welcome this weekend. We loved our time with you and hope you enjoy this together one evening.
When there isn't an occasion
Sometimes the best explanation is simply the truth.
I saw this and thought of you.
And that can genuinely be enough.
A few things that make a message feel more personal
Mention why you chose the gift.
“I thought you'd love this for your Sunday hikes” immediately connects the object to the person.
Refer to something you've shared.
An inside joke, a trip, a meal, something you're looking forward to or even a small everyday memory can make three sentences feel very personal.
Write the way you actually speak to them.
If you would never say “Wishing you endless joy on this special occasion” in real life, you probably don't need to write it in their card either.
Don't worry about making it perfect.
Specific and sincere usually matters more than beautifully written.
Sign it.
Especially when a gift is being delivered directly, make sure the recipient knows exactly who it came from.
